Trying to be all cool and tough this weekend, I was being a bit sloppy with a chainsaw. I’ve had the chain come off plenty of times before, but never had it tangle so badly I couldn’t immediately get it back to normal. As pretty much every DIY-er does now, my next stop was YouTube. And the two videos I tried described the way the Internet is now versus how it was and should be.
You’ve got this guy making a YouTube Short (someone tell me why these exist other than because TikTok and Reels exist):
50 some seconds, I can’t see a goddamned thing because it has giant subtitles over it so it can be theoretically watched with the sound off BY WHO I DO NOT KNOW and it is so peripateic I shut it off halfway through its 50 seconds run.
And then there was my guy here. He spends longer than the previous video just talking about how much he appreciates his audience before quietly and calmly teaching me just what I needed to know. You can frame this as Septics vs Brits too, but one of these videos is trying to BE HEARD FOR MONEY and the other is some guy using his retirement to pass on hard-won knowledge. Give me more of that.
